Re­gard­ing the ex­cel­lent ar­ti­cle The Days of the Jack­als [Au­gust is­sue], the au­thor notes that dur­ing the Sec­ond Afghan War, the pack of fox­hounds of the

16th Lancers marched with the reg­i­ment to Kabul and back.

There was prece­dent. One reg­i­ment took its pack along for the First Afghan War. Alas, its fate was dif­fer­ent. It per­ished due to dis­ease and the need for food on the part of the ex­pe­di­tionary force, all but one of whom was killed or taken pris­oner.
