after a free kick from Clarke took a deflection off a Coventry defender for the striker’s tenth league goal of the season.

In first half stoppage time Baker had the chance to equalise for the away side, but Crawley keeper Paul Jones did well to save his deflected shot.

Crawley doubled their lead on the hour after Essam bundled over a corner from Nicky Adams for his first goal since moving from Gillingham.

With less than 20 minutes to go Fleck had a chance to pull a goal back for City, but his effort glanced just over the crossbar.

Richie Barker’s side now sit four points off the play-offs and could potentially record three promotions on the bounce.

“Our chances of promotion have been at longodds since the start of the season, and so it should’ve been really, said Barker.

“We have to be realistic, the fact that we’re 43 games in and we’re still in with a chance of play-offs, although a difficult one, speaks volumes.

“It’s still going to be tough but we never gave up hope. We knew exactly how many games we needed to win. We felt we were in a false position with the amount of games in hand we had.We just made sure we were doing the right thing.”
