Lopez then had a 35th minute header, which was des­tined for the top left cor­ner, saved by a div­ing Stech af­ter be­ing found in the box by Lu­cas Akins.

Mo­ments af­ter half-time Luke Free­man threat­ened to give the hosts the lead by charg­ing down a clear­ance from Stech.

And Steve­nage boss Gra­ham West­ley was forced to con­cede af­ter­wards that his teams had de­servedly fin­shed up sec­ond best

“In fair­ness there was a vast dif­fer­ence in the ap­pli­ca­tion of the two teams to win the game,” he said.

“There were too many mo­ments where we didn’t show enough dis­ci­pline and or­gan­i­sa­tion, we didn’t show enough will to win and we didn’t show enough ur­gency.

“Pro­mo­tion teams play a cer­tain way, what­ever it takes you keep it out of your net and what­ever it takes you put it in theirs. We saw them do that to­day.

“It’s good to have th­ese tests, we’ve got a few more to come and we need to pro­duce bet­ter an­swers than

we did .”
