visitors who threatened first when centre-half Guy Branston headed wide on four minutes while a Michael Symes’ effort that whistled over the bar was Burton’s best chance.

Reuben Reid should have given Plymouth the lead straight after the break but sliced his effort over the bar from six yards and after Symes saw a headed effort disallowed for offside, Paterson grabbed the winner deep into added time.

The Pilgrims are just three points clear of the relegation zone with three games to play.

And despite feeling his side deserved something from the game, Plymouth manager John Sheridan bemoaned an inability to keep possession of the ball late on which ultimately proved costly.

“It’s a shame because I thought we definitely deserved something out of the game,” said Sheridan.

“We had a right go in the second half, created a few opportunities and I thought we were the better team.

“I’m not looking for excuses, but it’s just a bit of a downer when we take a corner and they end up scoring a goal.

“We needed to be a bit cleverer and keep the ball. It’s difficult to speak when it happens like that and that’s what happens when you’re down at the bottom. “It would have been a massive point for us and they’re a side going up automatically and I thought we were the better team.”

DONE IT! Matt Paterson celebrates his winning goal
