McDermott is well aware of the glory years Leeds en­joyed un­der Don Re­vie – and the first player he met on his ar­rival at the club on Fri­day was leg­endary winger Ed­die Gray.

“Ed­die was a won­der­fully skil­ful player in his day and I want my teams to en­ter­tain as well as win matches,” McDermott added. “Af­ter all the time I’ve been in the game I have col­lected only two foot­ballers’ au­to­graphs – one is Kenny Dal­glish and the other is Ed­die Gray!”

McDermott rose through the ranks at Read­ing and says proudly: “I’ve done just about ev­ery job there, which prob­a­bly stands me in good stead be­cause I know what each task en­tails. I like work­ing with play­ers and felt very com­fort­able in that Leeds dress­ing room on my first day in charge.

“There was an aw­ful lot of re­spect out there on the train­ing ground. It was tan­gi­ble and the vibes were good.”
