EVANS IS KEEN TO HANG ON TO ALEX
ALEX Revell may have attracted attention from League One clubs this season but Rotherham manager Steve Evans believes the striker could be a hit at that level with the Millers next season after he signed a new contract with the club.
The 29-year-old, who would have been a free agent in the summer, was the subject of a bid by Crawley last summer and two unnamed clubs in January.
But after Revell extended his deal at the New York Stadium until 2015, Evans says he has made the right choice.
“We knew the interest in Alex throughout the season and in the January transfer window, the chairman thankfully turned down a couple of offers,” said Evans.
“He turned a move to Crawley down for a sizeable fee last year, and I said to him then: ‘Stay here and show us what you’re all about’ and to be fair to him, he’s been outstanding
“After matches when I sit and have a beer or a glass of wine with a manager he’s one name who commonly crops up with regards to how well he’s done.
“When I spoke to him about staying here, his desire to play for us was incredible.”
FA Cup hero Mark Beard is stepping into the boxing ring next month in a bid to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Crawley Town youth team boss Beard best remembered at The Den for scoring in a 2-0 FA Cup win over Arsenal at Highbury is taking part in Fight4 Cancer.
He is now set to fight unbeaten light welterweight prospect Ricky Boylan while former Brentford defender Jay Lovett is also featuring on the same bill on Friday May 3.
Beard who fought as a youngster before switching to football cannot wait for his big night at The Coronet in London’s Elephant & Castle.
He said:“My Uncle Tommy had a gym in Dulwich. So between 10 and 16 I boxed. Then when I signed for Millwall I had to give up. I have carried on doing the training and the boys who are running the event are Millwall fans and put out an appeal and even though he is a professional I said:‘I’ll do it’.
“The last time I was in the ring I was 16 so that’s 22 years ago. I am a massive boxing fan with a guy I look after Frank Buglioni. He has a big future.
“I am fighting Ricky and he is a Millwall fan. I know he is unbeaten but he has got to catch me first – I am quicker than him!
“I think he is using it as a bit of sparring. We are using 16oz gloves so there is a little bit more padding and we are also wearing head gear. It would be great to see some Millwall and Crawley fans there.”
