York were not to be de­nied for long though as they went back in front in the 41st minute, when Tom Platt teed up Blair who ham­mered a pow­er­ful shot in to the left hand side of the goal.

The Shrimpers re­sorted to long ball foot­ball af­ter the break but al­most grabbed a late equaliser when sub­sti­tute Gavin Tom­lin had an ef­fort ruled out of off­side.

Barry Corr and Ryan Leonard then both had ef­forts cleared off the line dur­ing quick suc­ces­sion in stop­page time. And that frus­trated Phil Brown, whose team can­not now fin­ish in the play-offs.

“We weren’t good enough and when you de­fend like we did, you don’t de­serve to win any game of foot­ball,” said Brown.

“We played too di­rect and I don’t know why that men­tal­ity was there with the de­fend­ers and mid­field­ers.

“I can’t imag­ine our fans en­joyed watch­ing that and we now have to plan and pre­pare to make sure we do bet­ter next week­end and then also next sea­son.”
