York were not to be denied for long though as they went back in front in the 41st minute, when Tom Platt teed up Blair who hammered a powerful shot in to the left hand side of the goal.
The Shrimpers resorted to long ball football after the break but almost grabbed a late equaliser when substitute Gavin Tomlin had an effort ruled out of offside.
Barry Corr and Ryan Leonard then both had efforts cleared off the line during quick succession in stoppage time. And that frustrated Phil Brown, whose team cannot now finish in the play-offs.
“We weren’t good enough and when you defend like we did, you don’t deserve to win any game of football,” said Brown.
“We played too direct and I don’t know why that mentality was there with the defenders and midfielders.
“I can’t imagine our fans enjoyed watching that and we now have to plan and prepare to make sure we do better next weekend and then also next season.”
