remarkable revival under John Ward. But the manager was in no mood to party after the game.

A stony-faced Ward said: “The supporters were better than the team today. I have told my players that if they perform like that next season they will not get the same sort of reception.

“They have got away with it today because of what they have done previously since I returned to the club. “But they let themselves and the fans down. It’s not often I have been given cause to be critical, but I’m disappointed because it could have been a really good day for us today.

Molyneux’s goal was one of few moments of excitement in a scrappy match, which saw Accrington defend strongly throughout.

It took Rovers 23 minutes to register a shot and then Tom Parkes’ effort was straight at goalkeeper Paul Rachubka.

Young midfielder Ollie Clarke, making his first start for the home side, put in their best first half effort just before the break when his dipping volley just cleared the crossbar.
