POMPEY ALMOST EXIT ON HIGH
SHREWSBURY......3 PORTSMOUTH ....2
RELEGATED Portsmouth nearly produced a rousing fightback at Shrewsbury with their spirit saluted by Guy Whittingham in his first game at the helm since being upgraded from caretaker manager.
After struggling to find the rhythm which had seen them beaten only twice in their 11 previous games, Pompey trailed by three goals before setting up a jittery finale for the home side with two late strikes.
Whittingham, who was in charge of his first game as the permanent manager after a long stint as caretaker during a difficult season at Fratton Park, admitted it was disappointing not to produce a better performance in the last game of the season.
But he took some comfort from how his players responded to finding themselves 3-0 adrift.
“There is a lot going on in the players’ heads at the moment,” said Whittingham. “There has been a lot of talk about who is staying and who is going and when you have a group of players who are not quite sure where their future is, there is a lot for them to think about.”
“It was not really the way we wanted to finish the season but the last half-hour was very good.”
