out of play before rolling his low shot home.

Up until then however, the home-side had been on top with Ryan Cresswell heading a right wing free-kick from Freddy Eastwood inches over the crossbar.

Shrimpers striker Gavin Tomlin also had an effort well saved by Morecambe goalkeeper Barry Roche before Barry Corr fired over from close range.

But, after Fleming’s goal, Southend struggled to create chances and it was Morecambe substitute Chris Holroyd who came closest to scoring from long range.

“Andrew never gave up for the goal and that summed up our performance,” said Shrimps boss Jim Bentley.

“We seem to be a bit of a bogey side for Southend and I don’t think they’ve ever beaten us. “But we were a bit sloppy early on and they missed a couple of good chances but after we went in front I really thought that we were very good.

“We defended well and I can’t praise the players enough for that display at the back.

“I don’t think Southend really had a shot in the second half and it’s certainly a nice, positive way for our season to end.”
