ALEX Wood­yard is not sur­prised to be leav­ing Southend af­ter boss Phil Brown failed to call him back from a loan at Brain­tree.

The 20-year-old mid­fielder was one of five play­ers to be let go by Brown at the start of the week and de­spite be­ing des­per­ate to stay at Roots Hall, Wood­yard had be wait­ing for the in­evitable news.

“When the new man­ager came in and he didn’t call me back from my loan spell at Brain­tree I thought things didn’t look too good for me,” he said.

“It’s a big dis­ap­point­ment be­cause I would’ve wanted to stay and I thought I did quite well in some matches ear­lier in the sea­son.”
