Ainsworth not in the mood to celebrate

The Football League Paper - - LEAGUE TWO - By James Walker

WYCOMBE boss Gareth Ainsworth insists the club should not get carried away with their expectations despite getting off to a winning start.

Debutant Paris CowanHall’s early header was the difference between Wycombe and Morecambe after an end to end second-half.

The hosts controlled most of the first half but Matt Ingram rescued them 15 minutes from time with a superb diving save from Jack Sampson’s goalbound effort.

And Chairboys manager Ainsworth said:“I’m very happy with the result. Morecambe are renowned for being a good footballing side, and I think we more than matched them in the first half.

“It’s probably a disappointment that it’s 1-0 because I don’t think anyone would begrudge us a 3-0 or a 4-0 nil win. 1-0 is a nice result because it doesn’t raise expectation levels of anyone else coming here .

“People aren’t saying we’re going to win the league now because we’ve won 4-0. It’s not like that.

“A 1-0 is a steady performance, a real professional performance and I’m very pleased with the way we played.”

Cowan-Hall opened the scoring by heading home from Dean Morgan’s seventh-minute cross as he wrong footed centre-back Chris McCready to get the delivery in.

Josh Scowen and JonPaul Pittman should have doubled the lead on 26 minutes after they found themselves two-on-one with Barry Roche, who blocked the former’s side footed-effort with his legs.

Morgan almost scored on 50 minutes but dragged the ball wide from 15 yards and came close again with a 65th-minute strike that was destined for the top corner before Roche saved.

Ingram’s 77th-minute diving save denied Sampson from close range and the Shrimps striker also fired a 64th-minute strike from 15 yards wide.

McCready almost equalised with a header from a Ryan Williams corner but he hit the bar.

Morecambe manager Jim Bentley said:“It could’ve been 4-4, it could’ve been 6-4 it was a bit of a mad game like that but overall we didn’t really deserve anything out of the game.

“They played with an unbelievably high tempo; and stopped us from playing.

“It was evident in the chances we conceded, we got caught in possession and they broke with pace.

“We knew what to expect, but sometimes you’re not going to have it all your own way in football.

“The pitch is very long so we couldn’t zip it round.

“In the second-half we had a go and their keeper made a couple of good saves.” To comment on this match go to http://boards.footy
