Danny Guthrie’s stunner helps Reading’s beat Ipswich

FANS DESPERATE FOR THEIR PREMIER FIX

The Football League Paper - - NEWS -

READING manager Nigel Adkins used his programme notes to emphasise it doesn’t matter a whole lot what happens on the opening day.

But the fact that his side got a win in their first game since 2006 is a pretty good start.

The last time Reading played at home, they were on a pitch dripping with Premier League jewels. That was a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City and the fans want their top-flight fix again.

In Royston Drenthe they’ve got a player with star quality of their own and, if he can get to grips with the league, and actually play a decent amount of games, unlike in the rest of his career, he could rip it up.

This wasn’t pretty and will serve as a reminder to the home supporters what the Championship is all about. Little has changed in their season away. Mick McCarthy is a wily old boss. He has recruited well in the summer, got Ipswich well organised and they will cause problems.

And, in the mad world that is the league below the big boys, both of these could be having a big say in the promotion race.
