O’NEIL’S THRILL AT QPR MOVE
THEY’VE done it before and Gary O’Neil believes he and Harry Redknapp can gain promotion to the Premier League again – only this time at QPR.
The 30-year-old has signed a one-year deal at Loftus Road after failing to agree a new deal at West Ham.
But having worked under Redknapp before at Portsmouth, where they won promotion to the top flight 11 years ago, O’Neil insists he’s made the right decision in a bid to get back to the Premier League.
“The challenge here is an exciting one,” said the midfielder.
“Obviously I know Harry well and he was a big factor in me coming to the club. The promotion season we had under him at Portsmouth was fantastic.
“He’s played a massive role in my development as a player and now I’m back playing for him again and I want to repay him by helping this club get back into the Premier League.
“There are so many games in the Championship and you need a strong squad to cope with it.
“At this early stage when there are not too many injuries and there are no suspensions, it will look like there’s an abundance of talent and choices, but it doesn’t take a lot for people to miss games, so you need to have a competitive squad with strength in depth.
“Having been in and around the squad for the last few weeks, I’ve seen how united the squad are to achieve what we all want to do.
“The togetherness is there – it’s a really happy camp and there’s a real good feel to the place.”
Redknapp, who allowed playmaker Adel Taarabt to join Fulham on a season-long loan this week, added: “Gary’s a good player and a good pro.
“He was offered a new deal at West Ham but he decided he fancied coming here because he feels maybe he’ll get more game time at QPR.”
