WATFORD PUNISH NAIVE CHERRIES

The Football League Paper - - CHAMPIONSHIP -

THEY say promoted teams arrive on the crest of a wave. For Bournemouth, this was the moment it crashed into the rocks.

The Cherries didn’t deserve to lose 6-1. After a dominant firsthalf, you could argue they didn’t deserve to lose at all.

But this is the Championship, where mistakes are punished and missed chances cost games.

Watford’s finishing was ruthless and showed exactly why they are among the favourites. They will take some stopping.

But make no mistake. Bournemouth may be naive but they aren’t here to make up the numbers. They build from the back, play patient, passing football and flash forward with rapier speed.

Watford are a good side with a good wedge of international caps and even they were forced to spend long spells chasing the ball.

The Cherries will collect plenty of scalps this season and, with some shrewder defending, should be nowhere near trouble.
