TOUGH LOVE HAS DRENTHE READY
HE’S worked with some of the best during his time with Real Madrid but Royston Drenthe admits Nigel Adkins has got him back to his peak – at least physically.
The Dutch winger made the move to the Spanish giants back in 2007 from Dutch side Feyenoord when he was 20.
His career has somewhat stalled since then, though, and he found himself playing in Russia with Alania Vladikavkaz before his switch to the Royals this summer.
But after a gruelling preseason, Drenthe says Reading boss Adkins has been a major force in how easily he has bedded in.
“I have to thank the gaffer, I have to thank the coach and I have to thank everybody who is working around me,” said the 26-year-old.
“They worked really hard with me. It was a really tough pre-season but I’m in really good shape now.
Drenthe has bought a house in the area and is eager for a long stay.
“What I have seen so far in the Championship is the high quality of the league.”
