The Football League Paper - - LEAGUE ONE RESULTS -

ANDY TAYLOR – The Walsall defender chooses his favourite XI, made up from players he has played with or against in his football career

GOALKEEPER

Danny Coyne – Retired I played with Danny at Tranmere and he was a really nice guy and a great goalkeeper. You always felt confident playing in front of him, which was really reassuring. He played for a lot of different clubs and he’s now coaching at Shrewsbury. I wish him all the best.

RIGHT BACK

Kyle Walker – Tottenham When he was about 20, he came to Sheffield United and you could just tell he was going to make it. He was so athletic and so powerful, fast and strong. I’d put him up there as the best right back in the country. He also had a really nice manner about him, not big headed at all and just eager to learn.

CENTRE BACKS

Chris Morgan – Retired He’s a good pal of mine who I played with at Sheffield United. He’s a first-class professional and a born leader and captain. He would throw his body on the line every minute of every game. We both suffered serious cruciate knee injuries at the same time so helped each other. Andy Butler – Walsall Another fantastic pro and our captain at Walsall. He is just a very solid defender, reliable and also a nice guy. I’ve gone with players who are hard-working professionals and Andy certainly fits that bill.

LEFT BACKI

Andy Taylor – Walsall I’ve got to put myself in my own dream, haven’t I? You’d probably have to ask my team-mates about my strengths but I like to get forward and attack as much as I can. I’d also say I’m one of the brighter footballers around – I managed to get seven A stars in my GCSEs and two A-levels!

RIGHT MIDFIELD

Aaron Lennon – Tottenham I played with Aaron at youth level with England at U18, U19 and U20 level. He was just so unbelievably quick and it was just so hard to handle his pace and defend against him. Another you could tell would go on and be a top player.

CENTRALI MIDFIELDERS

Tom Huddlestone – Hull City Another I played with at England youth level. He is probably the best technical player I have ever seen. He is good with both feet, can spread the ball around the pitch and is a big physical guy. I was very impressed with what I saw playing with him and he’s on fire at the minute for Hull. Nick Montgomery – Central Coast Mariners An absolute workhorse and somebody you would want in your team. He would just not stop running the whole game – a born winner who works his socks off. He was not the most technically gifted but made up for it with his work-load.

LEFT MIDFIELDI

Jamie Ward – Derby County I played with him at Sheffield United and he was just an absolute livewire on the wing who could change a game. He’s a clever player who can finish well and is hard to pin down. Off the pitch he is a joker to have around the changing room.

STRIKERS

Ched Evans – Unattached He scored something like 30-odd goals when we were at Sheff United, and at the time he was only young so he was getting better and better all the time. He was a powerful centre forward, almost in the Alan Shearer mould and had a thunderbolt of a shot. Chris Porter – Sheffield United He is a big target man, always a handful to play against but holds the ball up really well. It was great to play with him at Sheffield United. He is also the tightest man I have ever met, he would open his wallet and moths would fly out. He is also a shocking golfer – all the gear but no idea.
