DOUBLE DREAM IS ALIVE
CRAIG Gardner’s second-half strike was the difference as Sunderland beat Southampton at the Stadium of Light to reach the FA Cup quarterfinals.
Gardner unleashed a blistering 25-yard drive four minutes after the break that crashed in off the underside of the crossbar.
Rickie Lambert missed the visitors’ best chance to equalise on 82 minutes, shooting over from three yards after meeting Nathan Clyne’s low cross.
Sunderland missed chances to extend the lead late on but ultimately it did not matter and their hopes of a cup double remain.
In a poor first half, Southampton came closest to scoring when James Ward-Prowse’s half-volley forced Oscar Ustari into a good save.
