RED DEVILS HANDED WIN WITH
REFRESHED Crawley returned from their ‘winter break’ to claim a crucial win at faltering Walsall but a controversial early penalty dominated post-match conversations.
Crawley had slipped alarmingly down the table after several postponements but Matt Tubbs’ double eased any fears of being dragged into relegation trouble.
His opener came just four minutes in after referee Jeremy Simpson awarded what seemed an incredibly harsh penalty against Saddlers skipper Andy Butler for handball.
Simpson also sent off Crawley’s Billy Clarke late on but Saddlers gaffer Dean Smith felt the hardest done by as his side’s play-off bid suffered a big blow.
Smith said: “I asked him at half-time, I said: ‘Is there a new directive I don’t know about?’ I was told the wording is ‘deliberate handball’.
