THERE is no chance of Ted Smith joining Southampton according to Southend boss Phil Brown – despite the young goalkeeper appearing for the Premier League side’s youth team.

Smith played for the Saints’ U21 side on Monday against Everton after the south coast outfit were faced with an injury crisis.

The goalkeeper signed his first professional contract earlier this year and has been capped twice by England U18s, who he is due to join up with next week for the game against Germany.

And Brown is adamant the youngster’s long-term future remains at Roots Hall.

“It was a win-win situation for Ted, training in fantastic conditions at Southampton, and a win-win situation for the club,” he said

“Dan Bentley did something similar last season, and look how we’ve reaped the benefits of that this season with 17 clean sheets.

“Ted has a very promising future in the game and I see that future with Southend . To say his future is in doubt would be wrong.”
