WIGAN MUST STILL FIND HIGHER GEAR
THE Sky cameras may have been in town but this was far from box office. In a game dominated by defenders and stifled by an overcrowded midfield, genuine chances were absent.
To Leeds fans, that will come as no sur- prise. Lacking genuine pace or a cutting edge up front, they essentially have two tactics – bang it to big Matt Smith and hope for the best or give it to Ross McCormack and bank on individual brilliance.
It makes them an easy side to defend against and Wigan did that, with Emmerson Boyce and Ivan Ramis imperious at the back. On this basis, Massimo Cellino’s cash can’t come soon enough. Not that the home side were particularly incisive either; aside from the busy, bustling Martyn Waghorn, the Latics laboured to victory, perhaps the result of playing nine matches in the last 30 days. An improvement is needed for Arsenal next week.
