The Football League Paper - - CHAMPIONSHIP -

SO the wait goes on. But, like old age and taxes, it will come eventually. It wasn’t Burnley’s most fluent performance, nor their most robust.

But the way the Clarets fought off the nerves and then clung to their lead tells you everything about why they will be in the Premier League next season.

This is a side that has clearly believed – even when everyone else was tipping them to struggle – that the Premier League was more than a dream. One more point and it will be reality.

Of course, Burnley’s joy was in stark contrast to the now thoroughly entrenched sense of despair at Bloomfield Road. The place reeks of relegation and if you don’t score goals, you can’t win games.

The home side’s lack of ideas was alarming and unless Barry Ferguson can hit on a plan to create chances, they are in big trouble.
