JAMIE AND KEVIN ONE ELL OF DUO
TWO long balls into the box were Plymouth’s undoing in this game according to Pilgrims boss John Sheridan, who blasted his defenders for a lack of concentration when a point looked there for the taking.
Sheridan’s side competed manfully throughout although they created little and were undone by a first-half freekick from Jamie Devitt that was eventually finished by the in-form Kevin Ellison.
The two swapped roles for the winner as Devitt knocked home Ellison’s mishit shot with seven minutes remaining.
There was little to choose between the sides otherwise after Peter Hartley’s bullet header had levelled things up, with Sheridan stunned at the way his side let a draw slip through their fingers.
“There’s no way we deserved to get beat,” he said.“I felt we wer very comfortable in the game with the way we were playing, even though we weren’t causing their keeper too many problems in the game and I didn’t see us losing whatsoever.
“The manner in the way we conceded the two goals was disappointing but there’s no way we should have lost the game.
“The two goals were just so easy to see, they’re just straight balls into the box and you’re supposed to be set up to deal with them.
“I don’t think the lads really felt as though they could go on and win the game because it was there to be won and we’ve ended up losing.
“I thought we had a lot of the ball but I never really felt as though we could go and win it and hurt them.”
Morecambe took the lead on 19 minutes when Devitt’s free-kick was headed back across goal by Andrew Wright for Ellison to score from close range. The Shrimps pressed but it was Hartley who equalised, heading Lewis Alessandra’s ball powerfully past Barry Roche.
Morecambe peppered the Plymouth box with crosses, Hartley clearing one Andy Fleming effort off the line.
But it was the home side who got the breakthrough with seven minutes remaining as Devitt found the net from Ellison’s shot to lift Morecambe up to second in the table.
“We scored off a well-worked free kick routine and it’s always nice when they come off – we’ve had a couple now because we had one at Tranmere not so long ago,” said Shrimps manager Jim Bentley. “At half-time I tried to just tweak one or two things, both teams were going for it and both teams were playing OK, I thought second half was a totally different scenario though.
“Both sets of fans went a little bit quiet, it was quiet on the pitch and noone was getting anyone going but we still looked quite strong. We kept plugging away and we kept our defensive shape which I was pleased with.
“Thankfully at the end big Kev has smashed a mishit shot and Devitt was in the right place at the right time.”
