“I don’t think I’ve been as ex­cited about a young player, at any club I’ve been in­volved with, as I am him.

“I saw a young Glenn Hod­dle emerge and this is another world, but he’s a tal­ent.

“I just think he’s un­doubted qual­ity. He’s the best tech­ni­cal player we’ve pro­duced ever since I’ve been here. His at­ti­tude is so, so good. He’s grounded, he’s cor­rect, he’s proper, he’s from good stock. I per­son­ally don’t see a weak­ness.

“We just want him to keep do­ing his job and play­ing well enough for teams to be queu­ing up in Jan­uary.”

The 19-year-old mid­fielder burst onto the scene last term and has con­tin­ued to im­press this sea­son. SWANSEA-BOUND Matt Grimes has shades of for­mer Tot­ten­ham and Eng­land star Glenn Hod­dle, ac­cord­ing to Ex­eter’s di­rec­tor of foot­ball Steve Per­ry­man.

Per­ry­man, Tot­ten­ham’s record ap­pear­ance maker, saw Hod­dle in close quarters as the pair picked up do­mes­tic and Euro­pean hon­ours to­gether and feels Grimes is “the most ex­cit­ing player Ex­eter have pro­duced” dur­ing his time in the south-west.

Though the cash-strapped League Two club are adamant “de­spite ru­mours, Grimes re­mains an Ex­eter City player”, the Eng­land Un­der-20 in­ter­na­tional looks set to be the sub­ject of a suc­cess­ful £1.75mil­lion bid from Swansea when the trans­fer win­dow re­opens next month.
