THE ladies of Northampton were forced to play second fiddle on Valentine’s Day to a long-haired figure close to the hearts of Cobblers fans.

Rather than stock up on flowers and chocolates, those that followed Chris Wilder’s team to Mansfield yesterday were busy buying wigs and hairbands this week for ‘John-Joe O’Toole Day’.

A social media campaign celebrating the Northampton cult hero snowballed, with the club’s official website even asking supporters to submit videos of themselves at Field Mill. And, while a little bemused by the idea, midfielder O’Toole, 26, is grateful for the support.

“It was a surprise when I first found out, but it’s brilliant that I’m getting recognised,” he said.
