GLOVES ARE OFF NOW – GARETH

The Football League Paper - - CHAMPIONSHIP - By Jamie Holt

WYCOMBE pulled off the great escape by avoiding relegation on the final day of last season but Chairboys boss Gareth Ainsworth insists nothing but promotion will do this year.

Wanderers have arguably been the biggest surprise in League Two this season, having been in and around the automatic promotion places since September.

Despite that good form the club’s target was always about survival – but Ainsworth now admits the gloves are off.

“The time has come to say ‘let’s set a new target’ and that target is to get promoted against all odds,” he said.

“We’ve given ourselves an opportunity. Many people wrote us off but we can have a real crack.

“We made such a big thing of being safe, maybe everyone needed a new target. Well now everyone has got one. Let’s go for it. I’m really looking forward to the challenge.

“If we need outside help, we can get outside help. But it’s very tough. There are clubs in our league spending more than we ever could. We strongly believed that investing time in the squad would give us the chance to unlock some great potential.”
