‘Injured’ Holmes wins ovation

The Football League Paper - - FINAL THIRD -

RICKY HOLMES was Portsmouth fans’ player of the year last term, but they booed him mercilessly when he came up against them for new club Northampton on Tuesday night.

The diminutive winger had the last laugh, however, by curling home the winner and landing the man-of-thematch award for an all-action display.

And after suffering 80 minutes of abuse, manager Chris Wilder could even see the funny side of the 27-yearold feigning injury in order to allow him to milk the applause of the majority of the 4,871 inside Sixfields.

“I thought Ricky was outstanding, and he even managed for his calf to go tight with ten minutes to go so he could come off to a standing ovation,” laughed Wilder.“I said to him in the dressing room,‘Why didn’t you just tell me – if you wanted a decent reception from our punters, I’d have just brought you off anyway’.”
