READING boss Steve Clarke has raided the Premier League to aid the Royals’ Championship run-in.

The former Chelsea assistant has borrowed Blues youngster Nathan Ake for an initial month, while Crystal Palace striker Kwesi Appiah has joined on loan for the remainder of the season.

Appiah, 24, has been on loan at Cambridge United this term, scoring eight goals for the League Two side, and Clarke is delighted with his capture.

“When I looked at our bench during the game at Charlton, it was obvious that without Simon Cox and Yakubu we were light on attacking options,” Clarke said.

“Kwesi is a striker with different attributes to those already at the club. He hasn’t had too many opportunities since returning to Palace after a successful African Cup of Nations tournament with Ghana and we are hopeful that he will enhance his growing reputation while helping us to finish the season positively.”

On the signing of 20-yearold defender Ake, the Royals manager added:“He has been a fixture in Chelsea’s first team squad this season and we are grateful that they have allowed him to join us.”

DIFFERENT: Kwesi Appiah
