GUTSY READING DESERVED SO MUCH MORE

The Football League Paper - - THE FA CUP SEMI-FINAL -

LIKE an unarmed Christian at the Colosseum, Reading arrived at Wembley given little hope.

Out of form and short of talent, the Championship strugglers weren’t expected to put up a fight, let alone land a glove on the likes of Alexis Sanchez.

But the FA Cup has a funny way of making mugs of the pundits. The Royals belied the vast gulf in class with a performance shot through with grit, belief and intelligence.

Never at any point were Arsenal comfortable. Never were they given a moment to weave those bewitching patterns. Never did the Royals let up.

What a desperate shame then, that so flawless a performance was jeopardised by one terrible error.

Federici was magnifi- cent, his save to push Gabriel’s header onto the bar worthy of winning any match. His mistake was bad, but without him the Royals wouldn’t have made past 90 minutes. He, like Reading, deserved so much more.
