POMPEY NEED BIG NAME – WADDO

The Football League Paper - - TFLP - By Chris Dunlavy

GARY Waddock has ruled himself out of the running to be the next Portsmouth boss – and urged the board to appoint a big name following the departure of Andy Awford.

Awford, 42, was sacked following last weekend’s 3-1 defeat to Morecambe, with former Aldershot and Wycombe manager Waddock handed the reins until the end of the season.

But with the club linked to the likes of Ian Holloway, Darren Ferguson and Paolo Di Canio – in addition to bookies’ favourite Phil Brown – former QPR midfielder Waddock says he is happy to step aside.

“I’d love to manage again,” said Waddock, who won promotion to League One with Wycombe in 2011.“But whether this is right for me this time around, I’m not so sure.

High-calibre

“The club have advertised the role and with the amount of strong, high-calibre candidates out there, I’d say they’ll go for someone from outside.

“This is a big club. Home games, we’re getting 15, 16, 17,000. At League Two level, that’s absolutely incredible. The fans have been amazing but with that support comes expectation.

“They demand a big name with a track-record of gaining promotion, whether from this division or from higher divisions, which, to be honest, is exactly what this club needs.

“It’ll be a difficult job to turn it round, but the person who does will have some serious momentum. And personally, I’d love to stay here and be part of that.”

Awford, Pompey’s former academy chief, was appointed last May after impressing in caretaker charge, but has spent much of the campaign scrapping in the bottom half of the table.

“There was a bit of pressure on Andy, but what happened on Monday took everybody by surprise,” said Waddock, who arrived at the club as Awford’s No.2 in December.

Pressure

“I feel for Andy – he’s a good guy who did a good job but the board have done what they think is best.”

Ex-Leeds boss Dave Hockaday is another name believed to be in the frame but Neil Warnock, 12-1 with bookies, says he has had no contact with the club.
