Golden girl has sights set on Sweetman-Kirk
READING striker Helen Ward has backed team-mate Emma Follis to win the WSL2 Golden Boot after overtaking former Royals striker Fran Kirby in the club’s goalscoring charts.
Kirby left for Chelsea following the World Cup, but had already struck 11 times in five appearances for Reading in the first half of the campaign.
But a goal for Follis the Royals’ 8-0 destruction of London Bees last weekend took the striker up to 12 goals for the campaign, trumping Kirby’s tally and setting her up to finish as top scorer.
And Ward believes there is still plenty more to come from the England Under-23s striker as she seeks to chase down the tally of Doncaster Rovers Belles’ star Courtney Sweetman-Kirk.
“Emma must be feeling good about becoming our top scorer,” she said. “She’s really come up with the goods at times in games where we have needed a goal, and it’s counted for a lot for us.
“But, in general, we’ve played really well as a team and it’s not about any individual doing particularly well.
“So it’s great for Emma that she’s doing so well, and I’d love for her to go on and become top scorer in this league.
“But for us it’s about promotion as a team, and we’re doing it all together wherever the goals come from.”
