The Football League Paper - - LEAGUE ONE - By Joshua Peck

TOP of the league and unbeaten, it’s no surprise that Brighton swept up at the first set of monthly awards.

Manager Chris Hughton has been handed the Sky Bet Championship manager of the month for August, with in-form forward Kazenga LuaLua taking home the player award.

Hughton led the Seagulls to four wins from their opening five games, leading the Championship by three points. That is partly thanks to LuaLua’s three goals, including vital strikes against Nottingham Forest and Blackburn Rovers.

Hughton said: “It speaks volumes for what the players have achieved after a good pre-season and we were fortunate that we didn’t have any injuries.

“We’ve changed a few things from last year where we’ve looked to play two up front, which gives us more opportunities to get the ball in that final third.

“Kaz thoroughly deserves the award, he’s had a wonderful start. There were really good signs of it during pre-season and he came back in good shape.”

Walsall were the early pacesetters in League One, topping the table after five matches, and boss Dean Smith is rewarded for the Saddlers’ unbeaten start.

Coventry also made an impressive start, with forward Adam Armstrong netting five times.

The 18-year-old, on loan from Newcastle, has been named as League One’s player of the month, with his strike from 35 yards against Millwall sure to live long in the memory.

And while Armstrong has scored five, Leyton Orient’s Dean Cox has set up four, while finding the net twice as he won August’s player award in League Two.

It was an O’s double in fact, as five wins from five saw Ian Hendon named top boss.

Hendon said: “We are five games into a 46-game season. It is my job to try and maintain that good start over the course of the campaign.”

TOP BOSS: Chris Hughton
