JAMIE McGuire says he is relishing his role as Mansfield Town’s cheerleader – despite his lack of first-team action.

The 31-year-old has been left kicking his heels for much of the new season after an influx of new signings at Field Mill.

The midfielder did make his first start of the campaign in Tuesday’s 2-0 win at Stevenage but he revealed his job description has been tweaked.

“I haven’t been playing, but behind the scenes I make sure the lads are up for games. There are a lot of young lads in the team,” said McGuire.

“It’s about getting them up for games. League Two is a tough league. I am bolting round. I am a character and I like to gets the lads going and get the fans going. Long may it continue.”

The Birkenhead-born battler, though, still enjoyed his run out in midweek.

“It was a rare start and I enjoyed every single minute of it,” he added.
