IT’S not been spec­tac­u­lar but nor has it been dis­as­trous – and Wi­gan’s so-so start to life in League One moved up a notch with this re­sult.

The Sad­dlers were soar­ing go­ing into the game but Wi­gan were the bet­ter side and showed re­silience af­ter – again – go­ing down to ten men.

Ask Sheffield United how tough League One can be to get out of. But boss Gary Cald­well has bought well and the signs are there that when his new team gel, they will be top-six bankers.

Wal­sall’s fine start goes on and their ex­cel­lent de­fen­sive record – just six goals con­ceded in 11 – gives them a chance of stay­ing the course.

And if they can re­dis­cover the goalscor­ing touch they had in Au­gust, they might vie with Bur­ton for the ti­tle of this sea­son’s sur­prise pack­age.
