PENALTY DRAMA STURRS IT UP FOR GLOVERS

PAUL STUR­ROCK missed all the drama as his Yeovil side edged past Coven­try City on penal­ties in the sec­ond round of the John­stone’s Paint Tro­phy in mid­week.

“I was in watch­ing the TV,” Stur­rock ex­plained. “I’ve never watched penal­ties.We picked five ex­pe­ri­enced play­ers and ob­vi­ously the goal­keeper came to the show as well so I’m very pleased.”

Af­ter the sides had bat­tled out a goal­less draw, the Glovers won through 4-3 on penal­ties af­ter keeper Ar­tur Krysiak saved spot-kicks from Sam Rick­etts and La­teef El­ford-Al­liyu.

Vet­eran Jamie Cure­ton was on tar­get as Da­gen­ham & Red­bridge booked their place in the area quar­ter-fi­nals with a 2-1 vic­tory over Steve­nage. Ash­ley Cham­bers was also on tar­get for the Dag­gers.

League Two lead­ers Ply­mouth Ar­gyle came out on top in the Devon derby, beat­ing Ex­eter City 2-0, while Ox­ford United saw off Swin­don Town by the same score­line. Ke­mar Roofe struck twice for the U’s af­ter Swin­don had Jor­dan Turnbull sent off.

Bristol Rovers were also 2-0 vic­tors, beat­ing Wy­combe Wan­der­ers.

Gilling­ham fought back from a goal down to dis­miss Lu­ton Town 2- 1, while Southend con­vinc­ingly beat Crawley 3-0 and Mill­wall saw off Northamp­ton 2-0.

In the North­ern sec­tion, Sheffield United thrashed Notts County 5-1 with two penal­ties from Jose Bax­ter lead­ing the way. Matt Done, Ste­fan Scougall and a Che Adams penalty sealed it.

York City de­feated League One strug­glers Don­caster 2-0 with Vadaine Oliver net­ting twice.

Wi­gan came from be­hind twice at Crewe be­fore Yanic Wild­schut’s fine strike sealed a 3-2 win for the visi­tors and Rochdale edged out Ch­ester­field 2-1. Lewis Alessan­dra hit the win­ner.

Bury were de­feated by League Two More­cambe 1-0 thanks to a late win­ner from sub­sti­tute Shaun Miller and Black­pool beat Port Vale 2-1. Area quar­ter-fi­nal draw: North – Wi­gan v Black­pool, Rochdale v More­cambe, Fleet­wood v Sheffield U, Brad­ford or Barns­ley v York. South – Da­gen­ham & Rv Ox­ford, Gilling­ham v Yeovil, Southend v Bristol R, Ply­mouth v Mill­wall. Ties to be played in the week be­gin­ning Novem­ber 9.
