PENALTY DRAMA STURRS IT UP FOR GLOVERS
PAUL STURROCK missed all the drama as his Yeovil side edged past Coventry City on penalties in the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in midweek.
“I was in watching the TV,” Sturrock explained. “I’ve never watched penalties.We picked five experienced players and obviously the goalkeeper came to the show as well so I’m very pleased.”
After the sides had battled out a goalless draw, the Glovers won through 4-3 on penalties after keeper Artur Krysiak saved spot-kicks from Sam Ricketts and Lateef Elford-Alliyu.
Veteran Jamie Cureton was on target as Dagenham & Redbridge booked their place in the area quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over Stevenage. Ashley Chambers was also on target for the Daggers.
League Two leaders Plymouth Argyle came out on top in the Devon derby, beating Exeter City 2-0, while Oxford United saw off Swindon Town by the same scoreline. Kemar Roofe struck twice for the U’s after Swindon had Jordan Turnbull sent off.
Bristol Rovers were also 2-0 victors, beating Wycombe Wanderers.
Gillingham fought back from a goal down to dismiss Luton Town 2- 1, while Southend convincingly beat Crawley 3-0 and Millwall saw off Northampton 2-0.
In the Northern section, Sheffield United thrashed Notts County 5-1 with two penalties from Jose Baxter leading the way. Matt Done, Stefan Scougall and a Che Adams penalty sealed it.
York City defeated League One strugglers Doncaster 2-0 with Vadaine Oliver netting twice.
Wigan came from behind twice at Crewe before Yanic Wildschut’s fine strike sealed a 3-2 win for the visitors and Rochdale edged out Chesterfield 2-1. Lewis Alessandra hit the winner.
Bury were defeated by League Two Morecambe 1-0 thanks to a late winner from substitute Shaun Miller and Blackpool beat Port Vale 2-1. Area quarter-final draw: North – Wigan v Blackpool, Rochdale v Morecambe, Fleetwood v Sheffield U, Bradford or Barnsley v York. South – Dagenham & Rv Oxford, Gillingham v Yeovil, Southend v Bristol R, Plymouth v Millwall. Ties to be played in the week beginning November 9.
