ROWETT: MAIKEL’S SHOCKED EVEN ME
YOU’D think Gary Rowett would do the due diligence before signing Maikel Kieftenbeld – but the Birmingham City boss reckons he has been blown away by just how good his new midfielder is.
The Dutchman appeared to be Rowett’s second choice after a move for Nottingham Forest’s Robert Tesche fell through.
But Kieftenbeld has proved a huge hit at St Andrew’s having played all ten Championship matches so far.
“I thought he would be a good player for us, I think he has been even better than I imagined,” said Rowett of the 25-year-old.
“We watched him in the summer and got a text from an agent saying Maikel Kieftenbeld is available for 250,000.
“I went straight onto a system called Wyscout, for about four days solid, watched about 25 games and a thousand clips and couldn’t find a reason not to sign him.
“We had virtually done the Tesche deal. That got delayed and delayed and we had to move on.”
