MANSFIELD SHOW REAL PROGRESS
MANSFIELD Town manager Adam Murray said before kick-off he wanted to use the cup tie to test how good his surprise League Two play-off contenders really were.
Two years ago the Stags were thumped 4-1 by Oldham in the cup, but this time they more than matched the League One side, created the clearer chances, played the better football and deserved to go through.
But the Stags, with just two homes wins all season after they struggled to break down defensive opponents, again failed to find a cutting edge in front of goal and have now scored just twice in five matches and not in their last three.
Oldham’s David Dunn, still finding his feet in the job, admitted his side were poor in possession but will be rightly proud of the battling qualities.
