Oldham’s Vard luck story!

The Football League Paper - - FA CUP FIRST ROUND -

OLDHAM fans look away now – Jamie Vardy could have been doing this for you instead of Leicester if you’d come up with just £30,000!

Then-boss Paul Dickov regularly went to scout the England man when he was scoring for FC Halifax in the Northern Premier League, and told the board he wanted to sign the ex-Stocksbridge Park Steels hitman.

But Dickov couldn’t get his way – Athletic wouldn’t part with what Halifax wanted and Fleetwood Town nipped in to pinch him instead.

The former Boundary Park boss revealed: “Vardy is sadly for me and for Oldham the one that got away.

“When he was doing well at Halifax in 2011 I went along a few times. He was a little raw but I wanted to sign him as I knew he would become something.

“I went to the club and said ‘let’s get him' and they came back to me and said £30,000 is too much. He’s certainly worth a bit more than that now!”

A fair bit more. He has been linked with Manchester United and Liverpool with £15m said to not be enough to lure him away from City.
