The Football League Paper - - LEAGUE ONE - By Joshua Richards

CHARLTON chief executive Katrien Meire admitted the club felt compelled to sell teenage defender Joe Gomez to Liverpool in a £3.5m deal in the summer after learning a harsh lesson before Dale Stephens left The Valley.

They blocked the midfielder’s proposed move to Aston Villa in 2012 but, left with an angry player, they eventually sold him to Brighton.

“I promised Joe he could go when the right club came in. As much as I want to keep the players – and I will really try – sometimes it does not work to stop them,” said Meire.“You cannot frustrate a player too long.

“With Dale Stephens, his agent came to me and asked for a transfer after we had blocked it. He was angry we did not allow him to move to a bigger club.”

The Addicks have signed ex-West Ham and Bolton forward Ricardo Vaz Te, 29, on a free transfer. He had been a free agent since leaving Turkish side Akhisar Belediyespor earlier this year and has agreed a deal until the end of the season.
