The Football League Paper - - ADAM VIRGO -

DAVID Wagner deserves to be given a chance at Huddersfield. But I fear success for the German may harm the prospects of English coaches.

If he turns them around and does a lot better than Chris Powell, you can easily see chairmen around the country thinking ‘Maybe the foreign route would work for us too’.

That said, more and more clubs – even those with English owners – are heading towards a continental system with a head coach and director of football.

Foreign managers are used to that. In England, we don’t like change. Managers don’t like being told ‘These are your players, now coach them’. They want full control.

Unfortunately, British managers may need to accept this is the new reality or face being overlooked.
