KARL’S DEFENCE OF DEAL FOR ALLI

The Football League Paper - - CHAMPIONSHIP - By Ben Baker

THE reputation of 19-year-old midfielder Dele Alli grows with each passing week, but MK Dons manager Karl Robinson insists the £5m fee they received from Tottenham represents good business.

Alli scored 16 goals in League One last term, but has hit the ground running in the Premier League and broken into Roy Hodgson’s England squad.

However, Robinson insists Spurs did not get Alli for a bargain price.

“He could have gone for £2.5 million six months earlier,” he said. “We felt we doubled our value of him and got an amazing deal.

“£5 million at that particular time was a lot of money. Nobody can argue with that – I think it was very good fee.

“Five months on, we’re all here biting our tongues and lips – sat here now, they got the best deal!

“But it is easy to now say ‘do you think you sold him too cheap’, but at that particular time we didn’t.

“Alli was only 18 at the time when he was actually sold, and to be loaned back as well means I think it was a great deal for us.”
