The 42-year-old managerial rookie was appointed on Friday and replaces promotion-winning manager John Still, who was sacked after a run of one win in eight games.

Pools chairman Gary Coxall, manager Ronnie Moore and chief executive Russ Green visited officials from the top-flight Finnish club late last year.

“It’s a very competitive league in Finland and we think playing in it could be very beneficial for some of our younger players,” said Green.

FC Lahti managing director Tomi Honkenen added:“We’re very interested in the link with Hartlepool United – we play summertime football and Hartlepool play wintertime so it’s a good fit in terms of players going in both directions.”
