The 42-year-old managerial rookie was appointed on Friday and replaces promotion-winning manager John Still, who was sacked after a run of one win in eight games.
Jones spent two years playing in Spain and has since coached under Gus Poyet, Oscar Garcia and Chris Hughton at the Amex.
And Mackail-Smith, who worked under the Welshman at Brighton before joining Luton in the summer, HARTLEPOOL United fans can expect to see some Finnish players heading their way after the club linked up with FC Lahti.
Pools chairman Gary Coxall, manager Ronnie Moore and chief executive Russ Green visited officials from the top-flight Finnish club late last year.
“It’s a very competitive league in Finland and we think playing in it could be very beneficial for some of our younger players,” said Green.
FC Lahti managing director Tomi Honkenen added:“We’re very interested in the link with Hartlepool United – we play summertime football and Hartlepool play wintertime so it’s a good fit in terms of players going in both directions.”
