CAMERON GAYLE’S loan spell with Cambridge started with a bang but ended with a whimper.

Now U’s boss Shaun Derry insists his replacement, Darnell Furlong, is a much better fit for the club.

Right-back Gayle, 23, scored on his debut against Morecambe but will return to parent club Oxford today after just three further appearances.

Furlong joined on loan from QPR this month and is proving more than capable in Gayle’s place, leaving Derry with no qualms about the change of personnel.

“Cameron started the loan really well and produced some pretty high performances,” said Derry.

“Unfortunately he got injured and the recovery suggested I needed to bring somebody else in.

“Darnell, I feel, is a better fit for this club.

“Cameron scored a goal up at Morecambe and was part of a couple of pretty promising performances, but I set a standard. I can’t ever say just putting in performances on a Saturday is good enough.”
