SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY have secured the signature of Gary Hooper on a permanent deal – and team-mate Barry Bannan believes it will prove an excellent piece of business.

Hooper joined the Owls on loan from Norwich City in October and made 13 appearances before returning to his parent club this month after netting six times in his last six games.

However, his stay at Carrow Road was brief and Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal has brought him back to Hillsborough in a deal said to be worth £3m.

The 27-year-old striker has signed a three-and-ahalf-year deal and Owls midfielder Bannan admits the news comes as a welcome boost for the Owls’ promotion bid.

“It’s massive to get Gary back,” said Bannan.“It’ll be great to play with him for longer.

“In the last couple of weeks, when he has come back to his match fitness, he has been brilliant for us and won games as well.

“We have all sorts of strikers here at the club at the minute and a different mix.

“What Hoops will bring is important goals at important times.”
