Ainsworth fits Barnsley bill
JOHNSTONE’S Paint Trophy finalists Barnsley have Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth on their radar after Lee Johnson, the manager who led them to Wembley, left Oakwell yesterday to take the Bristol City job.
The FLP understands that Ainsworth, 42, is already being talked about in the corridors of power at the League One club, who are looking for a young, hungry manager with knowledge of the lower league market.
Another man likely to be on the Tykes’ hit-list is Sheffield-based Chris Wilder, 48, who has taken Northampton to the top of the fourth tier amid financial chaos this term, although the recent arrival of close friend Kelvin Thomas as chairman has smoothed matters off the field.
Ex-Swindon boss Mark Cooper, 47, will also come into the reckoning after being Barnsley chief executive Ben Mansford’s number one target last February before Johnson moved from Oldham.
He is currently weighing up an offer to take over at Scottish Premiership strugglers Kilmarnock.
Johnson’s assistant Tommy Wright and coach Paul Heckingbottom will have first chance to stake a claim, starting against Bury today.
