The Football League Paper - - CHAMPIONSHIP - By Pippa Field

DEFENDER Jason Demetriou says Walsall are League One’s answer to Premier League jaw-droppers Leicester City as the Saddlers refuse to drop off from the promotion race.

Walsall have had to contend with losing boss Dean Smith to Brentford this season, but Sean O’Driscoll has ensured their Championship dream remains very much alive since his arrival in December.

They were perched in second prior to this weekend, having enjoyed a better campaign than pre-season favourites Wigan, Sheffield United and Millwall so far.

And Demetriou believes the comparison with the Foxes – who have shaken up England’s top tier – is an apt one.

“They’ve got great characters and good team spirit. And that’s one of the main things we’ve got here,” said the 28year-old.

“That’s 60 or 70 per cent of it and we’ve got that in abundance. We think we’re one of the better teams in this league but we’ve always been kind of under the radar.

“A lot of people have been expecting us to slip away but we’ve managed to do well and stay up there.”
