BEN GIBSON believes the midweek defeat to Blackburn can serve as a kick up the backside for his Middlesbrough side in the long run.

The 2-1 reverse was Boro’s first in their last six games.

However, with one game still in hand, they remain very much in the race for automatic promotion.

But 23-year-old defender Gibson admits his side had it coming.

“We must be better,” he said. “I think it was a game we’d been waiting for, for a long time.

“We’ve had that period where people have been saying we had those games in hand.

“But they don’t mean anything unless you can get points on the board and unfortunately we’ve wasted an opportunity.”
