The Football League Paper - - CHAMPIONSHIP - By Andrew Lawton

NILE Ranger is Southend’s lucky charm and the Shrimpers have ensured their talisman will be at Roots Hall for the longterm after signing the striker on a three-and-ahalf year deal.

Southend are unbeaten in each match Ranger has started since joining in the summer – winning five times and drawing on three occasions.

The 25-year-old left previous clubs Newcastle, Swindon and Blackpool under a cloud – the latter a full 15 months after his last appearance for them – but was ecstatic to commit to the Shrimpers until 2020.

Southend feel it justifies their faith in giving him another chance.

“Tying myself down to three and a half years at Southend is a big thing because I was in a dark place before,” explained Ranger.

“Now, I feel like I’ve revived my career thanks to the gaffer, Phil Brown, chairman Ron Martin, and the players. The fans have backed me as well, so I’m really thankful to them.

“I’m pleased to have this opportunity and I’m going to continue to give my all.

“I’ve got a lot of strong people around me who told me not to give up on my dream and it’s all I know, so I couldn’t stop.

“I’m a Shrimper and now the focus is on the games coming up.”
