The Football League Paper - - CHAMPIONSHIP -

READING arrived at Fulham as the league’s form team with five straight league wins, conceding only once.

But stats can deceive, the Royals having also won just five of their last ten in all competitions.

Nonetheless, it was still surprising to see an inconsistent Fulham dismantle Reading so thoroughly, barely allowing the visitors a shot on goal.

Reading did themselves no favours, allowing Chris Martin far too much space for Fulham’s second minutes before Danny Williams lashed out as they blew their chances in ten minutes after the restart.

Reading manager Jaap Stam’s midweek talk of it being “very hard to end up in the top ten” seemed overly cautious.

But now that assertion seems rather prescient.

He will never have been so unhappy to be so right.

As for Fulham, if they can back this up over the festive period and discover some consistency a play-off place may not be beyond them.
