WEEKEND BREAK IS IDEAL FOR SADDLERS

The Football League Paper - - CHAMPIONSHIP -

FORGET the magic of the Cup. Walsall defender James O’Connor says a weekend break will help the rest of their campaign.

The Saddlers reached the play-off semi-finals last season but are outside this year’s promotion picture following a run of five games without a win.

However, a shock victory at Sheffield United last Tuesday – bringing the Blades’ 15-game unbeaten run in the league to an end – has got tails up at the Banks’s Stadium.

O’Connor believes their humbling by National League Macclesfield in the FA Cup first round will prove a blessing.

“We can use (the break) to clear up injuries, freshen up and go again. Hopefully we can kick-start our season.

“You look back at where we were seven days before (the Sheffield game) after losing 4-0 at Rochdale and how low everyone was. You are not going to suddenly start playing great football.

“It starts with hard work and application and we showed that in abundance.”
